The R36 family has two popular paths: the budget-classic R36S and the premium R36 Ultra. They share DNA, so the right question isn’t “which is better” — it’s “which fits how you’ll play”.
The differences that matter
| R36S | R36 Ultra | |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 3.5″ IPS | 4.0″ IPS — the headline upgrade |
| Shell & feel | Compact value shell | Premium finish, 4 color options |
| Storage options | microSD | 64G / 128G configurations |
| Typical buyer | First handheld, tightest budget | Daily player who values comfort |

The display is the real story
On paper 0.5″ sounds small. In hand it isn’t: the 4.0-inch panel makes menu text easier to read, gives 2D pixel art more room to breathe, and noticeably reduces squinting in longer sessions. If you play more than ~30 minutes at a time, this is the difference you’ll feel daily.
What’s basically the same
Both are strongest with classic 2D libraries, arcade titles and selected lighter 3D-era systems (details in our emulation guide). Both charge over USB-C and store everything on removable microSD.
Our honest recommendation
- Pick the R36S if the absolute lowest price is the priority and you’re fine with a smaller screen.
- Pick the R36 Ultra if this will be your daily retro device — the display comfort, shell quality and storage options compound over time. That’s also the model we quality-check and support directly.
