R36 Ultra SD Card Guide: Backup, Upgrade & Replace

Everything on your R36 Ultra — system files and your game collection — lives on the removable microSD card. That’s great for flexibility and risky if you never back it up. This guide covers the three jobs that matter: backup, upgrade, replace.

Back it up (do this first)

  1. Power the console off fully (hold power → Shut Down), remove the card.
  2. Insert it into your computer with a card reader.
  3. Copy the entire card to a dated folder on your computer (e.g. r36-backup-2026-06). For a bit-perfect copy, disk-imaging tools work too — but a full file copy already covers most recovery cases.

Rule of thumb: back up after setup, then after every big library change. Five minutes of copying beats rebuilding a collection.

Upgrading to a bigger or faster card

Your 64G or 128G card can be swapped for a larger one:

  1. Back up the old card completely (above).
  2. Format the new card (exFAT is the common choice for large cards).
  3. Copy everything from your backup onto the new card, keeping the folder structure identical.
  4. Insert, boot, and verify your games list looks right.

Choosing a quality card

  • Stick to name brands (Samsung EVO, SanDisk Ultra class) from reputable sellers — counterfeits are common in this size class.
  • A10/U1 speed class is plenty for retro libraries; capacity matters more than speed here.
  • If a bargain card’s price looks too good, it usually is.

Card habits that prevent 90% of problems

  • Never remove the card while the console is on.
  • Always “safely remove” on the computer side.
  • Keep one known-good backup at all times.
