What “R36” means
R36 is not a single product from a single company. It is a family of budget Linux-based retro handhelds built on widely-shared hardware (the RK3326 class of chip). Because the design is effectively open, dozens of sellers manufacture and brand their own versions. That is why:
- There is no single “official” R36 website or manufacturer.
- Model numbers are branding, not a generation ladder — a higher number does not mean newer or faster.
- The same physical device appears under many different names.
None of this makes them bad. The R36 family is genuinely good value for classic 2D gaming — you just have to shop by specification rather than by name.

“RG36”, “R36 Vault”, “R36 Ghost” and friends
Alongside the core models you will see names that look official but are not part of any coherent line — RG36, R36 Vault, R36 Ghost X, R36T and others. Some are seller-specific badges on standard R36 hardware; some borrow the “RG” prefix used by an unrelated established brand (Anbernic’s RG line) to look more credible.
Practical rule: if a name is not one of the models above, treat it as an unverified rebrand. That does not automatically mean avoid it — it means judge it purely on the listing’s stated specs, reviews and return policy, and do not pay a premium for the name.
