R36S Custom Firmware Guide: Flashing ArkOS & DarkOS with Win32 Disk Imager

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Flashing firmware is optional and at your own risk — the stock OS works fine out of the box.

One of the most-searched R36 topics right now is custom firmware — specifically ArkOS and DarkOS, and how to flash them with Win32 Disk Imager. This guide explains what these do, whether you actually need them, and how the process works at a high level, so you can decide with confidence. If you just want to play out of the box, see the stock firmware guide instead.

Do you even need custom firmware?

Honest answer: most people don’t. The stock OS on a genuine R36 Ultra or R36S boots straight into a working emulation front-end. Custom firmware is for enthusiasts who want:

  • A cleaner, faster interface and better organisation
  • Improved Wi-Fi features and scraping of box art/metadata
  • More per-system tuning and controls
  • Ongoing community updates

ArkOS vs DarkOS

  • ArkOS is the long-standing community favourite — stable, widely supported, and well documented for RK3326-class devices like the R36 family.
  • DarkOS is a newer, polished option that many R36S owners have been trying, with a slick interface — see our dedicated DarkOS install guide. It’s the reason “DarkOS” searches have jumped.

Both are installed the same basic way: you write an image to a MicroSD card and boot from it.

What you need

  • A quality MicroSD card (a fast, reliable card matters — see our SD card guide)
  • A card reader and a Windows PC
  • A flashing tool — either balenaEtcher (Windows, Mac and Linux; the easiest for beginners) or Win32 Disk Imager (Windows only). Both write the OS image to your card.
  • The firmware image you’ve chosen (ArkOS or DarkOS), from its official community source

How flashing works (overview)

  1. Back up first. If your current card has saves, copy them to your PC. Flashing erases the card.
  2. Download the firmware image from its official project page. Extract it if it’s zipped.
  3. Flash the image to the card. In balenaEtcher: click “Flash from file”, choose the image, select your MicroSD card, and click Flash — it detects the drive for you, which is why it is the safer choice for beginners. In Win32 Disk Imager: select the image and your card’s drive letter, then Write — double-check the drive letter, as writing to the wrong drive can wipe the wrong disk.
  4. Write the image and wait for it to finish.
  5. Insert the card into the correct slot on your handheld and power on. Most custom firmware runs a first-boot setup that expands storage and detects your controls.
  6. Restore your saves and add your legally-owned games — see how to add games.

A word on clones

Custom firmware is tuned for specific hardware. Genuine R36-family units are well supported, but some no-name clones use slightly different components, so a given image may not boot perfectly. This is one more reason to buy a well-identified R36 model rather than a mystery clone. If you’re unsure which model you have, our model comparison helps you identify it.

Play it safe

Use a separate MicroSD card for custom firmware so your original stock card stays untouched — if anything goes wrong, you just pop the stock card back in and you’re playing again. Start there, and only flash when you’re comfortable. If you’d rather skip all of this, the stock experience on the R36 Ultra is genuinely good on day one.

Our pick: the R36 Ultra
