R36 Ultra & R36S WiFi Setup + PortMaster Guide (2026)

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. WiFi availability depends on your exact model and firmware.

Two of the most common R36 questions go together: how do I get WiFi working, and how do I use PortMaster? WiFi opens up online features and metadata scraping, and PortMaster lets you run a library of game “ports” built for handhelds like these. Here’s the beginner-friendly walkthrough.

Does your R36 have WiFi?

WiFi support depends on the model and firmware. Wi-Fi-enabled variants like the R36S Plus include it out of the box; other units may need a compatible USB WiFi dongle or a custom firmware that adds support. Check your model’s listing and settings menu first.

Setting up WiFi (stock firmware)

  1. Open the Settings / Network menu in your handheld’s interface.
  2. Enable WiFi and let it scan for networks.
  3. Select your network and enter the password using the on-screen keyboard.
  4. Wait for it to connect — you should see an IP address or a connected indicator.

If WiFi doesn’t appear in your menu at all, your unit likely doesn’t have the hardware on stock firmware — a custom firmware like ArkOS or DarkOS (see our firmware guide) or a supported dongle may be required.

What WiFi unlocks

  • Box art & metadata scraping — auto-download cover images and game info so your library looks tidy.
  • Time sync and updates on supported firmware.
  • PortMaster downloads — the big one, below.

Getting started with PortMaster

PortMaster is a community tool that installs game “ports” — versions of games specifically packaged to run on Linux handhelds like the R36 family. It’s one of the most popular reasons people set up WiFi. The high-level process:

  1. Make sure you’re on a compatible custom firmware (ArkOS and several others bundle or support PortMaster). Stock firmware may not include it.
  2. Open PortMaster from your tools/ports menu.
  3. Browse the list of available ports and install the ones you want — PortMaster handles the download and setup over WiFi.
  4. Launch installed ports from your ports category.

Note that many ports require you to supply your own legally-owned game files for the original game — PortMaster provides the engine/port, not the copyrighted content.

Troubleshooting WiFi

  • Network not found: move closer to the router; 2.4GHz networks are more widely compatible than 5GHz on budget hardware.
  • Wrong password loop: re-enter carefully — the on-screen keyboard makes special characters easy to mistype.
  • Connects but nothing downloads: check date/time is correct (bad clock breaks secure connections).

More fixes are in our troubleshooting guide.

Want WiFi out of the box?

If online features matter to you, start with a Wi-Fi-ready model like the R36S Plus, or step up to the R36 Ultra and pair it with compatible firmware. Either way, WiFi plus PortMaster meaningfully expands what your little handheld can do.

Our pick: the R36 Ultra
