Yes, the R36S is a good gift for someone who grew up with older consoles or a child you want to introduce to retro games, as long as you know what you’re buying. It’s a small, budget handheld that plays classic games through emulators (programs that imitate old consoles), not a Nintendo or PlayStation product. Most gift problems come from three things: the cheap memory card it ships with, look-alike clones, and preloaded game collections. All three are easy to handle before Christmas Day.

Quick answer
- The R36S suits nostalgic adults and older kids who enjoy classic 8-bit, 16-bit and early 3D games; Retro Handhelds calls it a device you can hand “to anyone who has a gaming memory over the last 40 years.”
- It doesn’t suit someone who wants new releases, online play with friends, or official Nintendo games such as current Mario titles.
- The R36 Ultra is the step-up gift: Notebookcheck lists a 4.0-inch 720×720 screen and built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while the R36S has a 3.5-inch 640×480 screen and no built-in Wi-Fi.
- The hardware is legal, but preloaded game collections on cheap listings may include copyrighted games the seller has no licence for. The safe path is games the owner legally owns, homebrew and free ports.
- Tech Tactician calls the stock microSD cards “one of the most common points of failure on the R36S,” so a spare brand-name card is the most useful add-on.
- Christmas delivery times vary by seller and carrier, so check the delivery date shown on the listing before you order.

Is the R36S a good gift? Who it suits and who it doesn’t
Retro Handhelds’ long-time take is that the R36S is one of the few handhelds its writer would recommend to less technical friends, because it needs little setup. The same article says the device was “never really trying to be” the most powerful handheld. That’s the right expectation for a gift: simple, cheap fun, not a premium console.
It’s a good R36S gift for:
- A parent or grandparent who played arcade, NES or Game Boy-era games and wants that feeling back.
- A child or teen you want to introduce to older games, with an adult handling the first setup.
- A tinkerer. The R36S has an active custom firmware (replacement operating system) community; see our dArkOS guide.
Think twice if the recipient:
- Mainly plays current games such as Fortnite, Minecraft or new Switch releases. The R36S can’t run them.
- Expects polished software with official support from a big brand.
- Is a young child who will use it alone. There’s no age rating on the device and, as far as we could find, no documented parental-control feature in the stock software (not confirmed either way).
R36S vs R36 Ultra vs R36 Max: which makes the better gift?
All three use the same family of budget parts, so the choice is mostly about screen, Wi-Fi and size.
| Gift question | R36S | R36 Ultra | R36 Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen | 3.5-inch 640×480 IPS (Tech Tactician comparison) | 4.0-inch 720×720 IPS (Notebookcheck) | 4.0-inch 720×720 IPS (Tech Tactician; seller listings) |
| Chip | RK3326 (Tech Tactician) | RK3326 with Mali-G31 MP2 graphics (Notebookcheck) | RK3326 (seller listings) |
| Built-in Wi-Fi | No (Tech Tactician lists Wi-Fi as an upgrade on other models) | Yes, 2.4 GHz (Notebookcheck) | Not confirmed (Tech Tactician doesn’t mention it) |
| Stock software | ArkOS on the unit Retro Handhelds described in 2024 | EmuELEC (Tech Tactician) | Usually EmuELEC (Tech Tactician) |
| Size and carry | The most pocketable of the three | Larger body around a square screen | “Much less pocket-friendly” than the R36S (Tech Tactician) |
| Best gift for | A small, simple first handheld | The best all-round screen, plus Wi-Fi for add-ons | Someone who likes the R36 Max’s styling and mostly plays at home |
R36S, R36 Ultra and R36 Max gift comparison, as listed by the named sources (October 2026)
One thing surprises buyers: the R36 Max is often called the “big” model, but Tech Tactician and its listings give it the same 4.0-inch 720×720 screen as the R36 Ultra. It’s only bigger than the R36S. Sources also disagree on card slots: NerdsHeaven lists two microSD slots for the R36 Ultra, while Tech Tactician describes a single slot plus small internal storage.
As a retro handheld Christmas gift, the R36 Ultra is the easier pick for most people thanks to its larger, sharper screen. Our R36S vs R36 Ultra breakdown covers the details.
Is the R36S legal? The preloaded games caveat
The console itself is legal to buy and own. Held Games’ legality guide says that in most countries “the emulator software itself is legal,” citing US court rulings.
The games are a separate question. Many listings advertise thousands of preloaded games; Retro Handhelds described a 64GB card with about 15,000 games on the unit it covered. Held Games says downloading a ROM (a copy of a game) you don’t own is “legally equivalent to downloading a pirated movie,” and it reports that the Entertainment Software Association has called preloaded handhelds “superfakes” in a filing to the US government.
For a gift, the clean approach is simple. Fill the card with games the recipient legally owns, free homebrew games made for old consoles, and free ports. PortMaster, a free tool that installs game ports on Linux handhelds, lists ArkOS as fully supported in its FAQ, though some ports need game files you provide yourself. See how to add games and our Wi-Fi and PortMaster guide.
What should you add to an R36S gift?
Three small add-ons make the gift last longer: a spare memory card, a case and a screen protector.
- A brand-name microSD card. Tech Tactician says these consoles “tend to ship with the absolute cheapest and worst quality microSD cards.” A spare such as the SanDisk 128GB microSD card gives you somewhere to put a backup of the original card.
- A case. A soft silicone case helps with grip and small drops, and a hard EVA case protects it in a school bag.
- A tempered glass screen protector. It’s a cheap way to keep the screen free of pocket scratches.
The cases and glass below are made for the R36 Ultra. For R36S-sized cases and protectors, see our R36S accessories page.
How do you set up an R36S before you wrap it?
If you can, check the console before wrapping it. A unit that won’t start is easier to swap in November than on December 26. This checklist follows Tech Tactician’s setup guide.
- Charge it with a basic charger. Tech Tactician recommends a USB-A to USB-C cable with a basic 5V 1–2A charger and warns that USB-C to USB-C chargers often fail to provide power. It says units usually arrive about 50–60% charged.
- Charge before the first start. The same guide says the handheld should be fully or at least 80% charged, and not plugged in during the first boot.
- Be patient on first boot. According to Tech Tactician, ArkOS prepares the game partition on first boot, and a blank screen may need 2–3 minutes before you assume something is wrong.
- Back up the memory card. Tech Tactician’s advice is a “full image backup of each card,” not just copying the visible files. Our SD card guide explains how, in plain steps.
- Load and try a game. Add the legally owned or free games you picked and check that buttons and sound work.
- Leave firmware alone for now. Changing the operating system is optional. If the recipient wants to later, they should keep the backup and use only images documented for their exact device.
For an R36 Ultra, our R36 Ultra setup guide walks from first boot to first game.
How do you avoid an R36S clone when buying a gift?
Clones are R36S look-alikes built on different, often weaker boards. Retro Handhelds reported that some AliExpress sellers shipped K36 internals as genuine R36S units, called it “a classic bait-and-switch scam,” and warned that a seller’s past reputation is no guarantee.
- Read the listing closely. Retro Handhelds quotes a commenter saying the listings are “so vague you can drive a truck through them.” Look for a clear chip name (RK3326), screen resolution and real photos.
- Check the photos. The same article says the X button on some fakes looks italic, though some clones have since corrected this.
- Choose the seller with care. Tech Tactician suggests buying from a seller the community trusts and names the BOYHOM store as one example.
- Check it on arrival. Our guide to spotting a fake R36S lists the at-home checks, and the R36S clone types list helps identify what you received.
Buying an R36 Ultra gift? There’s no single brand behind it, so read the R36 Ultra original vs clone checks before ordering.
What age is the R36S suitable for?
There’s no official age rating for the console itself. Seller copy for the R36 Max describes it as a gift for “gamers 12+,” which is a marketing note, not a rating.
The games are what matter. The ESRB rates games, not emulation handhelds, using categories from E (Everyone) and E10+ up to T (13 and up) and M (17 and up). A preloaded collection isn’t rated as a whole and can mix titles from every category.
For a younger child, load the card yourself with games you’ve chosen, and keep the backup somewhere they can’t reach. Our page on handheld game consoles for kids covers more family-friendly picks.
When should you order for Christmas delivery?
Order early and trust the date on the listing. Cut-offs vary by carrier and seller, so check the delivery date shown on the product page and again at checkout. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday, December 25, per the US Office of Personnel Management holiday schedule.
- Check the return window. Scripps News reported that last season most items bought from Amazon through December 31 could be returned through January 31, 2026. The 2026 holiday policy is not confirmed yet, so check the return terms shown at checkout.
- Judge deals by history, not hype. Black Friday falls on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026, per OPM). Compare any deal with the price history on a tracker such as Keepa or camelcamelcamel, and check the seller and listing photos.

Frequently asked questions
Is the R36S a good gift for a 10-year-old?
It can be, if an adult sets it up first. The console has no age rating, and preloaded collections can mix games rated for every age, so load the card yourself with games you’ve chosen. See our handheld consoles for kids page.
Is the R36S legal?
Yes, the hardware is legal to own, and Held Games notes that emulator software is legal in most countries. Preloaded game collections are the problem, because they may include copyrighted games the seller has no licence for. Use games you legally own, homebrew or free ports.
Does the R36S come preloaded with games?
Many listings advertise thousands of preloaded games on the included microSD card. The card is a known weak point and the games may not be licensed, so back it up and add your own legally owned or free games; see how to add games.
Is the R36 Ultra better than the R36S as a gift?
For most people, yes. Notebookcheck lists a 4.0-inch 720×720 screen and built-in Wi-Fi for the R36 Ultra, while the R36S has a 3.5-inch 640×480 screen and no built-in Wi-Fi. The R36S stays the smaller, more pocketable choice. Compare them in our R36S vs R36 Ultra guide.
Will the R36S be on sale for Black Friday?
We can’t predict any seller’s deals. Black Friday 2026 is November 27; compare any offer with the price history on a tracker such as Keepa or camelcamelcamel, and check the seller and listing photos before you buy.
Where can you get a real R36S?
Buy from a seller with a clear listing and real photos; Tech Tactician names the BOYHOM store as one the community trusts. Then run the at-home checks in our spot a fake R36S guide when it arrives.
